    What is a CCF and how do I convert it to gallons?

    CCF stands for hundred cubic feet — a common water billing unit. One CCF equals 748 gallons. If your bill shows you used 10 CCF, you used 7,480 gallons. Some utilities bill per 1,000 gallons (1 kgal = 1,000 gallons). To find your per-gallon rate: divide the rate per CCF by 748, or divide rate per kgal by 1,000.

    Why is my water bill so high?

    Most unexpectedly high water bills trace back to one of: (1) a running toilet — a faulty flapper valve can waste 200–3,000 gallons per day. Test by putting food coloring in the tank; if it appears in the bowl without flushing, you have a leak. (2) Outdoor irrigation — sprinklers running more than intended or at inefficient times. (3) A dripping faucet — 1 drip/second wastes 3,000 gallons/year. (4) An actual meter error or billing mistake — utilities do occasionally misread meters.

    Is it cheaper to hand wash dishes or use a dishwasher?

    A modern ENERGY STAR dishwasher uses 3–4 gallons per load. Hand washing with running water typically uses 20–27 gallons for the same load. The dishwasher wins on water use by a factor of 5–7x — and uses less hot water energy too. The caveat: pre-rinsing dishes before loading wastes most of this advantage. Scrape, don't rinse.

    How much water does a lawn sprinkler use?

    A typical rotary sprinkler system delivers about 1 inch of water per week to cover a lawn, which requires approximately 600 gallons per 1,000 sq ft.     Water bill terminology

    CCF (Hundred Cubic Feet)

    The most common unit for water billing in the US. One CCF = 100 cubic feet = 748 gallons. If your bill shows a rate of $3.50 per CCF, you're paying $3.50 ÷ 748 = $0.0047 per gallon. This calculator uses gallons directly; enter your CCF rate × 748 to get a per-gallon rate.

    Sewer / Wastewater Charge

    A separate charge on most water bills for treating the wastewater that leaves your home. Sewer charges are typically calculated as a percentage of your water consumption (on the assumption that most water used indoors returns to the sewer). Sewer charges often equal or exceed water charges in older cities with combined sewer systems.

    Tiered Water Pricing

    A pricing structure where water gets more expensive as you use more — designed to incentivize conservation. Common in drought-prone states like California and Arizona. The first tier (essential use) is priced lowest; outdoor and discretionary use in higher tiers costs 2–4× more per gallon than the base tier.

    GPD (Gallons Per Day)

    The standard measure for tracking individual or household water consumption. The US EPA's WaterSense program defines efficient indoor water use at 45–55 gallons per person per day.
