"Long division is just a series of small, simple steps repeated until you reach the end. Once you see the pattern, it clicks!"

How long division works

Long division breaks a big division problem into smaller, easier steps. Here’s the pattern you repeat for each digit:

1. Divide — How many times does the divisor go into the current number?

2. Multiply — Multiply that answer by the divisor.

3. Subtract — Subtract to find what’s left over.

4. Bring down — Bring down the next digit and repeat.

When you run out of digits, whatever is left over is called the remainder.

Quick Questions

What is a remainder?

A remainder is what’s left over after dividing as evenly as possible. For example, 10 ÷ 3 = 3 remainder 1, because 3 × 3 = 9, and 10 − 9 = 1 left over. If there is no remainder, the division is called exact.

How do I check my long division answer?

Multiply your answer (quotient) by the divisor, then add the remainder. If you get back to the original number (dividend), your answer is correct! For example: 845 ÷ 4 = 211 remainder 1. Check: 211 × 4 + 1 = 844 + 1 = 845. ✓
