Factor Pairs

"The number 360 has 24 factors — more than almost any number of its size. That’s why ancient astronomers divided the circle into 360 degrees. It can be split evenly so many ways!"

What are factors?

A factor of a number is any whole number that divides into it evenly (with no remainder). For example, the factors of 12 are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12 — because each of those divides into 12 exactly.

Factors always come in pairs that multiply together to make the original number: 1×12=12, 2×6=12, 3×4=12. The only exception is a perfect square like 36, where one pair is 6×6 — both the same number.

Every number has at least two factors: 1 and itself. Numbers with exactly two factors are prime numbers. Numbers with more than two factors are composite.

Quick Questions

What is a perfect number?

A perfect number equals the sum of all its factors except itself. The smallest perfect number is 6: factors are 1, 2, 3 → 1+2+3 = 6. The next is 28: 1+2+4+7+14 = 28. Perfect numbers are extremely rare — only 51 are known, and mathematicians aren’t sure if there are infinitely many.

What’s the difference between a factor and a multiple?

Factors go into a number; multiples are what you get when you multiply. 3 is a factor of 12 (3 goes into 12). 12 is a multiple of 3 (3 × 4 = 12). A handy way to remember: factors are smaller (usually), multiples are bigger.
