Bitcoin’s extraordinary return history
Bitcoin is the best-performing asset of the last 15 years by an extraordinary margin. A $1,000 investment in July 2010 at $0.08/BTC would have purchased 12,500 coins. At Bitcoin’s peak of ~$109,000 in January 2025, that investment would have been worth over $1.3 billion. Even at today’s prices, it would be worth over $1 billion — a return of more than 1,000,000×.
But Bitcoin’s history also includes multiple 80%+ drawdowns. It fell from $20K in December 2017 to $3,200 by December 2018 — an 84% decline. It fell from $69K in November 2021 to $15,500 by November 2022 — a 78% decline. Investors who bought near peaks and sold near troughs lost most of their investment. Long-term holders who stayed through the volatility have been rewarded; short-term traders have frequently not been.
